Larry devoted his life to education, agriculture, and public service. Early in his career, he worked for the Agricultural Marketing Service in Washington and California. He also taught at Slaughters High School and Sacramento High School before managing a Farm Credit office. In 1967, he began what would become nearly three decades of service with the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in Hopkins County. Through his work with Extension, Larry became a trusted educator, mentor, and advocate for youth and agricultural development. He retired in 1996 after a distinguished career serving the citizens of Kentucky.
One of Larry’s greatest passions was working with young people. For more than thirty years, he coordinated the American Private Enterprise Program for high school students, first in Webster County and later in Hopkins County. Through this program, he helped countless students develop leadership skills, broaden their understanding of free enterprise, and prepare for future success.
On June 5, 1965, Larry married the love of his life, Madonna Hudson, in Onton, Kentucky. Together they shared more than six decades of marriage and recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Their partnership was marked by unwavering devotion, faith, and love for family.
A faithful member of Hanson United Methodist Church since 1968, Larry served in numerous leadership roles, including Board Chairman and Sunday School Teacher. His deep faith guided his life and inspired his commitment to serving others. He was also an active member in the Greater Madisonville Kiwanis Club, Hanson Masonic Lodge No. 766, and Madisonville Commandery No. 27 Knights Templar. Larry was an enthusiastic supporter of University of Kentucky athletics and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Wildcats.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Geraldine Sadler, Alice Lagene Allen, Camilla Ray, James Edward “Buzz” Mahurin, and Thornton Henry Mahurin; and two nephews, Mark Mahurin and Rick Mahurin.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Madonna Hudson Mahurin of Hanson; two daughters, Laura Beth Mahurin Malone (Craig Morse) of Evansville, Indiana, and Anne Marie Mahurin Witten of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and two grandchildren, Brandon Witten of Santa Cruz, California, and Cruz Witten of Northfield, Minnesota. He is also survived by seven nieces, Sandra Mercier, Karen Porter, Diane Jones, Shelia Smith, Jill Simpson, Debbie Carter, and Charlotte Zerfoss; and one nephew, Terry Mahurin.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Oasis Dementia Care and Gentiva Hospice for the exceptional care, kindness, and support they provided Larry and his family.
