New to Kentucky is the Team Kentucky Medical Debt Relief Program. The governor says it’s intended to automatically erase up to 250 million dollars in outstanding medical debt for over 130,000 residents through a partnership with Undue Medical Debt.
The governor says the state is investing 2.5 million of redirected funds. He says about 100 dollars of debt will erase each dollar spent.
More details about the death of the 11-month old Cleaton child are being released. Grayson Walton was found inside a Muhlenberg County home on September 13th. Authorities said 19-year-old Elijah Mayes was babysitting Grayson while the child’s father was at work. Mayes is charged with murder. The citation says his meth charge stems from a shard of meth in a dresser drawer belonging to Mayes at that home. Authorities said Mayes made a fake phone number and texted himself, pretending to be the person he gave the baby to, in an attempt to fortify his alibi.
The Central City Police Department is mourning the death of a much loved and appreciated officer. Jason Phillips began with the department in 2020. He died unexpectedly at his home. The department says Jason loved his family, his coworkers, and the community he served. They say his personality, laughter, and friendship will be deeply missed.
Funds intended to revitalize communities are coming to Western Kentucky. The governor says Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville will receive 2.8 million dollars for a new CT scanner for its emergency department. There are also funds to upgrade security. Madisonville Community College will get 1.8 million for workforce training equipment. Muhlenberg County will get 2 million for manufacturing and welding equipment at a new regional training facility. The governor says since the beginning of his administration, Team Kentucky has received over 177 million dollars in abandoned mine land-funding.
The I-69 driver with three people in the front seat, with only two of them wearing seat belts, is facing four driving violations. During the traffic stop of Charles Rose, the officer reported the smell of alcohol. Empty beer cans and a half empty bottle of vodka were located in the Ford Ranger. After Rose admitted that his auto insurance had lapsed, he was arrested.
The next meeting of the Madisonville City Council is this afternoon. New business includes amending the code of city ordinances relating to property taxes. The 4:30 meeting will be at city hall.
The Hopkins County Board of Education meets at 5:30 at the Central Administration Office. It’s at 21-35 North Main Street.
The Hopkins County Schools is announcing the appointment of a new Director of School Counseling and Mental Health Programs. Dr. Whitney Peay has a background in clinical mental health, school counseling, crisis intervention, and counselor education. Superintendent Dr. Damon Fleming says Dr. Peay’s proven track record with initiatives like Youth Mental Health First Aid and proactive crisis response will be invaluable assets.
