When the Hopkins County Fiscal Court meets this morning, one of the items on the agenda will deal with a Land and Water Conservation Fund grant agreement involving the Madisonville Soccer Club Complex. The meeting begins at 10 at the Government Center in Madisonville.
The Dawson Springs City Council welcomes residents to their meeting this afternoon. New business includes the pool project. It begins at 5:30 at 200 West Arcadia Avenue.
The Kentucky Democratic Party is making money as a result of the arrest of a former governor. They are selling T-shirts and mugs of Matt Bevin. They say the profits will support the work they do to get more Democrats elected. Bevin is in jail for refusing to to turn over financial documents and for not appearing at court proceedings related to his adopted son’s attempts to get child support.
In Frankfort, education leaders want changes to be made in regards to how schools are graded. The proposed changes include student growth in reading and math, as well as a chronic absenteeism measure. The revised system would also report new quality data, such as how many teachers hold advanced credentials or how many graduates complete the FAFSA.
In Greenville, a 50-year-business will shutting down next month. Luke’s Town and Country Flea Market is located just off of Highway 62. Owner Judy Rice says it’s time to move on to the next chapter of her life. She says she is the only one in the family running the flea market and costs are rising.

The Central City police are holding a teenager in the death of an 11-month-old Cleaton child. The father of the deceased child told the police that 19-year-old Elijah Mayes was supposed to be caring for the child on Saturday. The body of Grayson Walton was found in a residence in the 300 block of Hillview Street after a search warrant had been issued because suspected meth had been located there. Mayes faces six charges, including murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a controlled substance. The investigation has not ended.
The state senator representing Hopkins and three other counties says his friendship with Senator Rand Paul is important to him. Robbie Mills and many others believe Senator Paul will soon be the state’s senior senator. At the age of 84, Senator Mitch McConnell has spent a portion of the summer recovering at home following a fall, and for treatment for pneumonia. His extended absence from the Senate has been sparking public discussion regarding elderly lawmakers and term limits. McConnell’s office says he has been undergoing physical therapy at home.
The pension system once plagued by a multi-billion dollar funding crisis now has gone four straight years with double-digit investment gains. It’s being described as a massive financial milestone for the Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Kentucky. The pension system was widely regarded as one of the most severely underfunded in the country. The retirement system now uses a careful, diversified investment strategy that has helped the fund grow, even when financial markets faced global challenges.
