The Pennyrile Area Development District is reminding Medicare beneficiaries that they could be eligible to save money. It’s for those who are living on a fixed income, that qualify for programs that help pay a Medicare Part-B premium, and reduce prescription drug costs through the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help. There will be a session this morning from 9 untill 11 at the Hopkins County Senior Citizens Center.
Not surprisingly, the Madisonville police remember names and faces of those who violate the law. In this case, when Colton Allen knew that the police knew he had violated an Emergency Protection Order, he took off running from the courthouse. Just before he was captured on Hall Street, Allen tossed away a small baggie of meth that the officers found.
There’s a new school bus safety law. Drivers must stop for any school or church bus displaying its stop-arm and flashing red lights. This is for drivers from either direction on all roads. This new rule is now being enforced.
A Kentucky congressman is talking about getting rid of flock cameras. Law enforcement uses them to capture those fleeing from the law or driving a stolen car. Representative Thomas Massie says he will soon sponsor a bill to withhold federal funds from municipalities and police departments that deploy Flock, and similar cameras, as he puts it: “to surveil law abiding citizens.” The cameras are programmed to photograph all vehicles that have license plates reported as stolen, or that have been involved in crimes.
There’s new leadership at the Salvation Army in Madisonville. Captain Dennis Smith and his wife most recently served in Morgantown-West Virginia. Their first impressions of Madisonville are positive but they know, like in other communities, there are many who have spiritual and physical needs.

The driver that failed to dim his lights is what drew the attention of a police officer who noticed that his registration tag was expired. During the traffic stop of Nester Ledezma (luh-DEZ-muh), the officer noticed that his registration tag was out-dated, and that he was not able to supply a driver’s license. Before Ledezma was arrested, Central Dispatch notified the officer that he had been stopped before, for the same infraction.

The Kentucky Board of Optometric Examiners (KBOE) wants to restore full national testing requirements for new optometrists. During the pandemic, the state board granted waivers or alternative testing allowances for optometric students that later led to concerns around transparency and patient safety. The state’s latest attempt continues to draw criticism from national testing groups who say loopholes remain for some already practicing doctors.
