The state senator representing Hopkins County in Frankfort believes available and reliable energy is what can make Kentucky a leader in industrial development. Robby Mills believes he is probably the most vocal advocate for fossil fuels in the General Assembly. He says he is not a fan of large scale solar, wind or battery storage. Mills looks forward to the day when coal and gas will burn more completely, and for the time when nuclear fuel and small modular nuclear reactors may serve Kentucky’s fuel needs.
Since the Hopkins County Humane Society is about to construct a new building to replace the one destroyed by the wind last year, every fundraiser is especially meaningful. Tomorrow (Saturday) they have a 5-k run at City Park. Here is Director Dustin Potenza.
Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Texas, to announce the end of slavery and ensure that all enslaved African Americans were finally freed. Locally, the African American Coalition of Hopkins County says it is again not sponsoring a Juneteenth Festival due to a lack of community support. They say they have tried to sponsor the Juneteenth Festival for the last 3 years, however, the total community support just wasn’t there.
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says this is the annual free fishing weekend. No licenses or permits are needed June 6th and 7th. Some regulations remain in effect, though. Size limits and catch limits still apply, and permission is required for fishing in private waters.
As we all know, drug investigations are all too common today. After executing a search warrant, the Madisonville police arrested Frank Maerz at his home on Crowley Lane. Officers located a sustantial amount of loose synthetic marijuana that had been packaged for resale. They also located a chemical mixture for synthetic marijuana. At the same address, they also arrested on the same charges, Laura Huddleston and Matthew Foe.
The Kentucky Department of Education says one of the 12 students selected to be in this year’s Presidential Scholar Semifinals attends Madisonville North. Alexavier (uh-leg-ZAY-vee-ur) Colton Garrott is in career and technical education. The Presidential Scholars Program honors some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. More than 5-thousand students with exceptional SAT or ACT scores apply for the program.
The Webster County Water District says some residents may notice some discolored water, especially in their hot water heater. This may occur until the hot water is completely used and replaced by with fresh water. Running the faucet for a short time can help clear it up. They say, in some cases, additional flushing may be needed.
Muhlenberg authorities are still investigating the Monday’s gas pipeline leak and fire in Graham. A half-mile perimeter involving 18 homes from Bards Hill Road and U.S. 62 along KY 175 is still up. BP says the gas line from northern Indiana to Dixon has been shut down.
The Green River Area Development District is receiving a crumb-rubber grant. Projects are planned for new playground surfaces, benches, picnic tables, and additional accessible amenities to many GRADD communities.
