Obituary
He was born on February 14, 1925, in Brady, Texas to the late Roman Kolodey and Mamie Newman Kolodey. He was a proud World War II veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he flew as a U.S. Marine gunner on a Grumman TBF Avenger dive bomber in over one hundred missions in the South Pacific where he engaged in all three major battles of the Solomon Islands. He retired as a butcher and management from the A & P Grocery Store chain and Sureway. He enjoyed meeting new people and was known to have never met a stranger. Richard was of the methodist faith and was very active in his church where he was recognized for good Sunday school attendance for over seventy years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Marie Timmons Kolodey; and his brother.
His survivors include his sons, Monte Kolodey of Slaughters, and Randy (Shirley) Kolodey of Madisonville, KY; brother, Fred Kolodey of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Hayden Kolodey of Evansville, IN, and Pastor Neil (Tara) Kolodey of Providence, KY; great-grandchildren, Nathan (Maddi) Tapp of Madisonville, and Brooklyn (Heath) Jones of Nebo, KY; great-great-grandchildren, Leland Tapp, Jax Tapp, and Mason Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2025, in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Pastor Neil Kolodey officiating and assisted by Steve Henry. Burial to follow at Slaughters Cemetery in Slaughters, KY. Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Marine Corps at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour on Monday at the funeral home.
