It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles Richard Downs, Sr., 88, who left us on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at his home in Slaughters, KY. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and friend that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was born on November 5, 1936, in Henderson, KY, to the late Katie Lee Keene Downs and George Joseph Downs. Charles was a wonderful son, brother, dad, and papa. For over fifty years, he worked for Austin Powder Company as a blasting operator in Madisonville, KY. Charles lived a life full of generosity, love, and kindness. He never met a stranger and could sit and talk to you for hours. He touched the lives of many. He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family, especially having the grandchildren around. Charles was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Lou Sutton Downs; sons, George Joey Downs and Charlie Downs, Jr.; and eight brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his daughters, Charlotte (Larry) Brown of Henderson, KY, and Elizabeth (David) Hardin of Slaughters; sons, Rick (Sylvia) Downs of Henderson, Christopher Glenn “Cooter) Downs of Slaughters, and Richard (Lillie) Sutton of Slaughters; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and even a few great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Pastor Bobby Gish officiating. Burial to follow at Zion Brick Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the funeral hour on Saturday at the funeral home.
