Juneteenth is being commemorated today in Madisonville. At a recent city council meeting, council member Glenda Wade read a prepared statement from Mayor Cotton. (Clip in audio below)
The proclamation declares today as as the day of celebration.
Even though this is the Juneteenth holiday, the Disaster Recovery Centers will be open with their regular hours. Those impacted by the April rain can visit any Disaster Recovery Center to get in-person assistance. No appointment is needed.
A Madisonville man is facing nine charges. On Friday night, the police were called to an address on Wiman Drive where they encountered Roberts Grigsby. His charges include public intoxication, assault, burglary, trafficking in controlled substances, resisting arrest, and terroristic threatening. In attempting to make the arrest, Grigsby and the officer went to the ground, but not before Grigsby took possession of the tazer for a while. The police were told that Girgsby had taken psychedelic mushrooms. During the struggle, the officer’s body camera was damaged.
Two of the top people in the Hopkins County School District are retiring. Superintendent Amy Smith and Board of Education member John Osborne each shared a few words at their final board meeting. Smith described the district’s transition out of the covid pandemic, as well comments about the Strategic Plan, and the Hopkins County Future Ready Graduates. Osborne said the board has worked well together and made decisions that have had a positive impact.
The Juneteenth Holiday is today. City offices are closed. The Sanitation Department says today’s run will be done tomorrow, and Friday’s routes will be done on Saturday.

A vacancy is now filled with the Hopkins County Schools. Martha Phelps has been appointed by the school board to the Division 1 seat. She is an office manager and does appraisal research for G. Herbert Pritchett & Associates. Phelps was formerly a Business Administration instructor and director of the TRIO Talent Search for Madisonville Community College. She will take the oath of office next month.
The M-P-D is reporting the arrest of a driver who attempted to go down a one-way street the wrong way, and later, sped away from the officer as he was approaching with his emergency light on. During the traffic stop, it was found that Melvin Hernandez had no operator’s license. Hernandez was taken to the county jail.
A Madisonville police officer felt that a traffic stop was in order for the vehicle that had so much mud on the license plate, that it was not legible. Jacob Whitfield’s Audi also had a cracked windshield and there was the strong odor of marijuana inside. A vehicle search produced several empty bags of marijuana. Whitfield faces four charges.
An M-P-D canine has a birthday this week. Loki is three years old. Loki’s handler is Officer Gunther.
