A bicyclist with serious injuries is being treated at Baptist Health Deaconess. Christopher Williams was hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe on South Main Street yesterday Monday morning at 2-20. The police say Williams disregarded a stop sign. The Tahoe was driven by 30-year-old Cierra Mann. Both Williams and Mann are Madisonville residents.
One person is recuperating from minor injuries in a two-vehicle collision in Madisonville on Saturday evening. Witnesses at the intersection of North Main and Arch say the Jeep Cherokee being driven by 52-year-old Christopher Justice disregarded the red light and struck the Toyota Corolla. Passenger Leah Cherokee visited the E-R.
The Hopkins County Humane Society is working with the Fiscal Court on plans for a temporary shelter. Their primary building was destroyed in April by a tornado. Officials are waiting for a final decision from the insurance company.
The Greenville Police Department is reporting a text scam. It’s a deceptive text notifying the victim that he or she has an outstanding traffic ticket. If you receive such a text, do not respond to it. It is written to sound official, but it’s not. Phone the Greenville police if you receive such an email.
Proposed sweeping cuts to the Medicaid program in Congress could see the positive trends in overdose deaths reverse. Ashley Spalding of the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy worries that counties could see fewer federal dollars if the funds are rolled back. (Clip in audio below)
A Madisonville man is being charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and with abandonment of a minor. After the police were contacted, they arrived at the 200 block of Noel Place to find a child who had been left unsupervised in a vehicle for two hours. The say the rear driver’s side window had been broken out. The suspect is the father of the child Kealbrett Pauley. Pauley’s child is about three years of age and is autistic.
One of the newest prisoners at the Hopkins County Jail is accused of raping a young victim. There apparently were numerous incidents invovling 47-year-old Jason Thompson of Madisonville. Thompson is charged with Rape 1st degree.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office is reporting the arrest of a man charged with trespassing near Clay. On Sunday during the investigation on State Route 143, they report that Derek Sigers (SIGH-gurs) of Clay dropped the items he was holding and began to flee. He was apprehended shortly thereafter. A search of Sigers and his property produced a quantity of controlled substances, along with residential electrical wiring. He now faces 7 charges, including burglary, and possession of a controlled substance.
The Annie E. Casey Foundation says critical issues like poverty and educational attainment are all too common. Terry Brooks with Kentucky Youth Advocates says tax credits based on child care and earned income could put more money in the pockets of low-income households. (Clip in audio below) Brooks says in a child welfare ranking, Kentucky is number 36.
