William “Bill” Howell, 77, of Owensboro, KY passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Heartford House in Owensboro, KY.
He had been battling cancer for the last 4.5 years. He was born on May 6, 1947, in Madisonville, KY to the late Bob Howell and Mary Elizabeth Howell. He graduated from Madisonville High School in 1965. He worked at Kroger in Madisonville and Sureway in Henderson before he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1969. He was deployed to South Vietnam for 14 months. Once he returned to the U.S. in 1971, he was employed at Peoples Bank and Trust Co. in Madisonville till 1975. He then went to work at Ahlstrom for 33 years till his retirement in 2008. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Owensboro, KY.
Bill was proud of his military service and enjoyed talking to other veterans about the military. He was an officer in the Jaycees in Madisonville for more than 10 years and held many positions. He loved his Sunday School class, The Mavericks, and Pastor Paul Strahan. Bill attended church until he was no longer physically able. Bill loved spending time on his computer, reading, and traveling when he was able. He will be terribly missed. He is survived by his wife of almost 17 years, Mila Noffsinger Howell of Owensboro, KY; his sister, Shelly (Tommy) Howell Jones of Owensboro, KY; two nephews, Kevin Jones and his significant other Dr. Julia Hall of Lexington, KY and Ryan (Jessica) Jones of Owensboro, KY; one great step-niece, Caitlin (Ryan) Crabtree Abdullah of South Carolina; one great niece, Jane Jones of Owensboro, KY; two stepsons, Shawn (April) Helm of Evansville, IN and Eric Helm and his significant other Sarah Burton and her daughter, Addy, of Paducah, KY; four step-grandchildren Owen, Ansley, and Khloe Helm of Paducah, KY and Sawyer Helm of Evansville, IN.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his great step-nephew, Jacob Crabtree.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday January 15, 2025, at Barnett-Strother Funeral Home – Madisonville Chapel with Pastor Paul Strahan officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville with military honors.
Visitation for William “Bill” Howell will be from 11:00 A.M. until the service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Active Pallbearers will be Tommy Jones, Kevin Jones, Ryan Jones, Shawn Helm, Eric Helm, and Owen Helm. Honorary Pallbearer is Sawyer Helm.
