When a drunk driver knocks down a pole and the police find him standing next to it, it’s pretty obvious what’s about to happen. 30-year-old Barrett Elliot was arrested Saturday night on South Madison Avenue. The police report states that Elliott smelled like alcohol and was having trouble keeping his balance. He told them he had been drinking at a restaurant.
In Frankfort, lawmakers and the Community and Technical College System want to make it easier for students to transfer and implement dual credits. The board of regents say the system is facing a whistleblower lawsuit from a former chief of staff who alleges she faced retaliation for reporting waste and mismanagement. Phil Neal of the K-C-T-C-S says the Board of Regents’ recommendations are aimed at improving the process to obtaining two-year college degrees and expanding options for students.
Neal says a recent audit found a need to improve internal policies and procedures, but found no evidence of fraud or criminal behavior.
In Washington, Senator Rand Paul is behind the effort to reduce red tape for the agriculture community. He says the Paperwork Reduction for Farmers and H-2A Modernization Act will reform the antiquated H-2A and H-2B temporary worker programs that he describes as unnecessary regulatory burdens. He says the measure will allow Kentucky’s farmers and industries to grow, succeed, and support the Commonwealth’s economy.

The National Weather Service says temperatures will be down into the 20s and 30s by Friday, with overnight lows dipping into the teens.
A new rule to improve road safety now applies to all drivers beginning in January. Kentuckians must complete a vision screening to renew their driver’s license. One option is to visit a driver license regional office and be screened. No appointment is necessary. The other way is to be tested by a medical professional. Online driver’s license renewal is still available.
In Webster County, the sheriff’s office has two suspects in an auto theft case. The investigation of two vehicles led deputies to State Road 132-East in Dixon. Arrested were 18-year-old Josie Woods and a 17-year-old juvenile. It’s reported that the minor was also connected to another area auto theft in November. Woods faces three charges, including receiving stolen property. The minor faces similar charges. The state police say the investigation is continuing.
When a police officer knows that a driver has a suspended license, it quickens the arrest. Such was the case with Chelsea Cunningham on Saturday night when she was stopped on Hopewell Street. She was not wearing a seatbelt and her license plate was not readable. Cunningham was transferred to the county jail.
There’s a faculty member at Madisonville Community College who is spreading the word about a productive degree area. Joey Jones says electronic devices are a big part of the medical industry.
He says M-C-C is one of only 60 schools in the country offering a degree in Biomedical Technology Systems.
