William Darriel Harris, 92, of Manitou, KY, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Baptist Health Deaconess in Madisonville.
He was born on November 21, 1931, in Manitou, KY, to the late Verlie Walker Harris and Clifford Harris. He retired after thirty-seven and a half years as a coal miner for Peabody Coal Company. He was the owner and operator of W.D. Harris Farms. He was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed gardening, four-wheeling, and taking care of his herd of cattle. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. Darriel was a member and deacon at Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Madisonville.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, J.C. Harris and Jerry Harris; and his sister, Wanda Jo Reynolds.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-eight years, Anita Lutz Harris of Manitou; son, Eric (Kim) Harris of Manitou; sisters, Doris Rainwater of Manitou, Lawrence Etta Davis and Quinna Cunningham, both of Madisonville; step-grandsons, David Wallace of Japan and Joshua Wallace of Hanson, KY; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, August 30, 2024, in the chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Elder Kenneth Blevins officiating and David Harrison assisting. Burial to follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville. Military Honors will be conducted graveside by the United States Army and the Hopkins County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until the funeral hour on Friday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers are Ted Malin, Jerry Russ, Lyle Granthum, Dennis Duncan, Craig Walker, and Ricky Roberts. Honorary pallbearers are Owen Cunningham, Aiden Shelton, Donnie Pyle, and Terry Harris.
Memorial contributions may be made in Darriel’s memory to the Christian Food Bank of Hopkins County, 241 W. Center Street, Madisonville, KY, 42431.
