Through its public assistance program, FEMA is announcing funds for recovery and mitigation projects stemming from severe storms, flooding and the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes 4.6 million to Baptist Health Madisonville for emergency protective measures. This funding is part of more than 2 billion dollars that FEMA announced for almost 15-hundred projects nationwide.
Air conditioning problems are being addressed at Webster County High School. Six HVAC units that affect several classrooms need attention. School Superintendent Michael Gooch says one of the biggest challenges has been getting the parts needed to complete repairs. As a result, the district is using portable air-conditioning units.
Frankfort is out with the governor’s appointments to state boards and commissions. Appointed as Magistrate for the First District of Muhlenberg County is Cozy Chappell of Drakesboro. She replaces Malcolm West who resigned.
The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education is glad to report that more low-income students are successfully completing college courses before graduating high school. The Council on Postsecondary Education says dual credit is one of the most effective tools to make the path to college more affordable and attainable, particularly for students and families who may question whether college is within reach.

A Madisonville man is being charged with being intoxicated by a controlled substance. When the officer arrived at the 26-hundred block of Country Club Drive, he spotted Gene McKnight sitting in the yard. McKnight changed his stories several times as he spoke to the officer, leading the officer to conclude that McKnight was under the influence of a controlled substance. He was placed under arrest since the officer considered him to be a danger to himself and others.
In Central City, the red and white flashing lights from the viaduct on North Second Street are gone. The fire department says they have proven to be ineffective and expensive to maintain. Vehicles still hit the viaduct and the lights create a distraction for other drivers, especially at night.
In Greenville, the American flags are back on Martin Hill at the summer house in JP Morgan Park. The Tourism Commission says there’s a flag for each life that was lost on September 11th, 2001. On September 11th, it again will be the site of the 25th anniversary memorial of 9-11. All are invited.
Kentucky now has a new online payment portal for the Board’s Offender Collections Program. It will make it easier for offenders to repay their debt. This announcement comes on the same day that the Crime Victims Compensation Board shows more survivors are aware of, and are receiving assistance from, the Crime Victims Compensation Fund. It supports survivors of violent crime with such things as medical and dental costs, mental health counseling, and sexual assault examinations.
