Sam “Big Sam” Smith, Jr., 61, of Hanson, KY, was called home on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Baptist Health Deaconess in Madisonville.He was born on March 27, 1965, in Webb, MS, to the late Ora Carter Smith and Sam Smith, Sr. Sam will always be remembered for his contagious joy, his zeal for life, and ability to make everyone smile. Sam was always optimistic and approached every day with enthusiasm. He touched many lives with his kind heart and willingness to help. Sam had a true appreciation for life and the many social connections he formed. Sam attended Madisonville First Assembly.

Sam will be greatly missed by his soulmate and confidant, Bobbie Jo Shortt; brothers, Kenneth Smith and Steven Smith, both of Chicago, IL; sisters, Evelina Smith and Brenda Jenkins, both of Chicago, IL; aunt, Betty Carter; nephews, Kenneth Jr., Steven Jr., Jayden, Devon and Calvin; and his niece, Kayonna.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Harris Funeral Home was entrusted with care.
