The National Weather Service says dangerously cold wind chill values of minus 15 are expected tonight (Friday) and tomorow morning. Residents are being reminded to dress in layers to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
In Madisonville, the Sanitation Department is encouraging all customers to place their toters at the curb regardless of their normal collection day. The city will be running all of the routes for the rest of the week.
They say ice is worse than regular snow. The trucks with blades on the front cannot do anything with it. Since Muhlenberg County has sheets of ice, the state has enlisted several counties to help. They say only heavy equipment can clear the roads in these conditions.
In Kentucky, the medical cannabis industry has made another step forward. Here is Governor Andy Beshear.
The first medical cannabis processer is in Dayton. The governor says more products will be available at open dispensaries in the coming weeks.
The just completed year was one of the best-ever for the state’s organ donor registry. The Donate Life Kentucky Trust says each new name on the Donor Registry increases the chance of a life-saving transplant. The Donate Life Kentucky Trust also provided more than 20-thousand dollars in scholarships for students who wanted to creatively express their donation and inspire others to register as donors.
The state says road crews have covered more than 670-thousand miles. That’s 26 times around the Earth.
Frankfort is reporting 10 deaths due to the snow storm. At the coldest times, 10 to 30 minutes outside can cause frostbite and hypothermia. Pets need to be inside. Black ice is a significant hazard, especially during morning commutes. This is forcing drivers to slow down.
Here’s a safety tip from the Kentucky State Police. After it snows, brush the snow off your vehicle so another motorist won’t have a chunk of frozen snow fly off your vehicle and into his windshield.
The mayor thinks there’s a citizen movement to help the city. Kevin Cotton says he is very encouraged to see so many young people who want to know more about Madisonville.

When it comes to the deadliest winter states, Kentucky is number 5. The Bluegrass State has just over 6 fatal crashes per 100-thousand drivers during the months of December through February. The online driver education platform known as Zutobi says the high rating is blamed on rural isolation plus winter unpreparedness.
