Madisonville is considering positioning itself for opportunities invoving space, aerospace, and defense. The Economic Development Corporation participated in a conference entitled Consultant Connect ECONOMIX. What they discovered was that there are opportunities for Madisonville-Hopkins County and Western Kentucky to strengthen their position in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and defense.
More details about the Saturday night house fire on Earlington Road are expected. It took nearly four hours to extinguish, and the cause of the blaze is not yet known. No one was hurt. A number of fire agencies were involved.
The police say that failing to stop at an intersection is a good reason for a traffic stop. When that occurred to Jayson Williams recently on North Spring Street in Madisonville, the police report noted that Williams’ registration sticker had been scratched off. There was a strong odor of marijuana in his Honda Civic. Williams also had no auto insurance. Central Dispatch notified the officer that this was a second, no auto insurance offense. Williams was transported to jail and his vehicle was towed away.
The December graduation at Madisonville Community College is just around the corner. The ceremony is Thursday, December 11th at 5:30 at the Glema.
The effort to increase the number of people who are being screened for lung cancer is helping to lower lung cancer rates. For years, the Commonwealth has been the national leader. The screening involves a simple C-T scan that can identify tumors before symptoms appear. The screening is recommended for adults aged 50 to 80 who have been lighting up for a long time. The strategy includes helping health care systems build better lung cancer screening programs.
Sometimes a cop feels led to check the validity of a license plate. Recently, the Ford Ranger being driven by Maxx Phebus was stopped for that reason on Princeton Road at Boone. When he failed the sobriety test, it was found that he was using a suspended license and had no insurance. Phebus was then transported to the detention center.
A Webster County Sheriff’s Deputy is credited with spotting an impaired driver. Danny Higgs was arrested on State Route 120 East. The arrest report states that Higgs was given a field sobriety test and was found to be under the influence. Higgs was transported to the detention center.
The West Kentucky Film Commission is working to promote the area as a film location. Mayor Kevin Cotton says the group spent most of last week in California showcasing Western Kentucky, as well as learning about the film industry. (Clip in audio below) The mayor believes the visit was well worth it.
Health officials around the state, including Hopkins County, are concerned about the spread of whooping cough. They are suggesting that residents watch a short video on pertussis that was produced by the the world’s largest integrated, not-for-profit medical-group practice known as the Mayo Clinic. There’s a new hunting restriction in Kentucky. It’s now against the law to fish or hunt wildlife using a drone. The Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources says this regulation has been needed for some time.
