The president of Independence Bank is now one of the Madisonville-Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation Board of Directors. It’s felt that Kent Mills’ presence will help advance economic growth and opportunity. Mills is the former president of the United Way of Hopkins County, the Madisonville-Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation, and the Hopkins County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Dawson Springs High School is delighted to know that it is the highest ranked high school in the county. U.S. News and World Report places it 29th of 225 Kentucky high schools. The magazine’s criteria includes college readiness, proficiency on the state assessment, underserved student performance, and the graduation rate. Dawson Springs Superintendent Lenny Whalen says the rating is an accomplishment for our teachers and staff.
The Madisonville-Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation believes the city’s new 30 million dollar Town Center is already outperforming expectations. And several stores have not even opened. Early sales figures are two to three times higher than projected. The E-D-C says this success will increase local tax revenue, and strengthen existing businesses. With daily traffic counts exceeding 19-thousand on Island Ford Road and I-69, the center is poised to become a retail magnet in Western Kentucky.
Madisonville Illuminated is back this year. It’s a free,family event featuring a hot air balloon presentation at Mahr Park. Here is Madisonville’s Events Director Lucy Bess. (Clip in audio below) It’s Friday from 4 until 10 at Mahr Park Arboredum.
Some Madisonville North students will be converting another freight box into a medical clinic that will be used in Liberia. The project will involve over 400 students. Like last year, the project is being made possible by Harper Freight Tools for Schools. Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville will be helping with the clinic’s design. In Louisville, S-O-S International will provide the medical equipment. The school says contributions are also being made from a number of local organizations, including Sherwin-Williams and Rural King.
The Madisonville police are charging a man with trespassing after being on the Rural King property after hours on two different occassions. In the most recent occurance, Gordon Colburn was found to be in possession of meth and drug paraphernalia.
A Madisonville man is charged with violating an emergency protection order. The protected party told the police that Steven Matheny drove by his residence and shouted out a greeting. The police say Matheny violated the order.
The organization known as the Champions for a Drug Free Muhlenberg County believes the county needs more Mental Health and Suicide Prevention efforts. In fact, they believe the community needs a Mental Health & Suicide Prevention Coalition. There will be a meeting at Greenville Second Baptist Church this evening at 6. Everyone is welcome.
A big crowd is expected again this year at Mahr Park Aboredum for Madisonville Illuminated. It is the area’s premier hot air balloon event. Here’s Mayor Kevin Cotton. (Clip in audio below)
