The Hopkins County Fiscal Court meets this morning at 10 at the Government Center on North Main. Old business includes the second reading of the Street Legal Special Purpose Vehicles ordinance.
The state senator representing Hopkins County is glad he is attending the National Conference of State Legislators in Boston. Robby Mills says legislators and staff from across the nation are discussing policy issues and networking. The sessions include discussions on such subjects as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, tariffs, and energy infrastructure.
It’s not unusual for a police officer to spot someone he knows has active arrest warrants. After Jeffrey Johnson knew he had been seen by a cop, he hopped on his bicycle and was almost hit by several vehicles as he attempted to leave the vicinity. After falling off his bike, he ran into a wooded area, but was captured behind T-Mobile on Madison Square Drive. Since Johnson continually resisted the commands of the officers, he was tazed. The police found him to be in possession of multiple syringes and suspected synthetic marijuana. Johnson faces six charges, including resisting arrest.
The Madisonville police say the man who damaged his former girlfriend’s home and property is being charged with assault and burglary. The incident with Roger McCarty occurred on South Daves Street. He left the scene before the police arrived but was arrested shortly thereafter. McCarty cooperated with the officers.
It’s early harvest time at the garden at the Hopkins County Jail. Officials are proud of the work put in by the road crews. Over 42-hundred pounds of vegetables have been grown so far. That includes over a thousand pounds of both squash and corn.
As expected, the new shopping center just off of Whittington Drive has traffic congestion. The city says the short-term solution includes upgrading Whittington Drive, but that a full overhaul of the area is 5 to 7 years away. In the meantime, new traffic patterns will be implimented. This includes installing a right in, right out turn lane at the end of Hudson Park Drive to help cross-lane traffic.
A call to the police department in Madisonville informed them of a reckless driver. In no time, Peri Brown was located and charged with eight crimes. Not only was she under the influence, she was seen speeding, making improper lane changes, and not using headlights in low light conditions. As the officer arrived, she slammed into the front of the police cruiser, causing damage to the vehicle. The police report says Brown had two children in the car.
The agricultural community will tell you that cannabis has the ability to be a major Kentucky crop. They say it grows well due to a favorable climate and rich soil. (Clip in audio below) The state is in the process of selling medical cannabis due to its ability to relieve severe and chronic pain.
Two Hopkins County teachers are being honored by the state. Jamie Scott and Willis Holmes have developed Career Technical Education courses that can be used around the country. Their work went through multiple rounds of review. Now, Scott and Holmes’ courses are among 200-plus courses that can be viewed in the Career Technical Education portal.
