The decision by Hopkins County to establish a film commission to benefit from the growing film and television industry is gaining strength. A number of cities want to be included in the West Kentucky Film Commission. The official launch of the effort was yesterday at the Glema Center when the governor made the announcement. He said the Bluegrass State not only has the right setting for many productions, but the community support, talent, and access as well. Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton believes Western Kentucky is a rising name in the industry.
In Madisonville, the victim of an assault is recovering from a puncture wound to his chest. The police say last Friday morning, Emma Stotts entered a residence on Hall Street where her victim and ex-boyfriend were staying. There was an altercation. Stotts was arrested later.
The Hopkins County Jail is holding a man charged with sexual abuse and distribution of obscene matter to minors. The Madisonville police say 31-year-old Preston Darnell confessed to watching pornography in the presence of a ten-year-old. Darnell is being held without bond.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of some weapons. In searching the West Elm Street home of a Clay resident, duputies spotted in plain view meth,marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Arrested was 60 year old Ben McCallister. The deputies say they will continue searching for the weapons.
A civic initiative in Earlington is being proposed. Needed are volunteers to mow, work weed eaters, and do trash pick-up on Saturdays in June and July. The effort welcomes donations of sunscreen, bottled water, and gloves. Also needed are the names and addresses of residents who need a helping hand. The driver of a Volkswagon Beetle with a large crack across the windshield is facing three charges. Emilio Contreras could not provide a driver’s license or proof of insurance for the officer. Contreras was placed under arrest on Saturday afternoon and taken to jail.
The new president of Madisonville’s Economic Development Corporation is a familiar face. State Representative Wade Williams represents Hopkins County in Frankfort. He is Madisonville’s former police chief. Williams was asked how this new job came about. (Clip in audio below)
The Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation is reporting that over one million dollars in new grant funding has been approved for Muhlenberg County. Nearly 200-thousand dollars in community grants have been submitted. The projects include support for the Chamber Youth Leadership Program, spay & neuter days facilitated by the Humane Society, clean-up efforts in Drakesboro and Central City, and expungement assistance for justice-involved residents. The next Community Grants application deadline is July 14th.
The Hopkins County Clerk’s Office is announcing that 40 military-themed license plates are being offered. Each includes decorations received for distinguished military service. They are for any owner of a noncommercial motor vehicle who has been decorated. Proof of eligibility is required at the time of purchase. They can be seen online at drive dot K-Y dot G-O-V.
