The Madisonville Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation says Madisonville is positioned in the middle of one of the nation’s leading metal manufacturing regions. According to their tracking database, the region has seen more primary metal manufacturing projects over the past five years than any other part of the country. There was a major surge last year. The E-D-C says this is one of the reasons Madisonville and Hopkins County are attracting attention from companies in this industry. Many say the East South Central region is not just competing—it’s leading.
The film and television industry in Western Kentucky is growing. Today, Governor Beshear visits the the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts to announce industry initiatives, workforce development, and business opportunities. The press conference begins at 1 o’clock.
Kentucky advocacy groups say the state is not doing enough to keep kids out of foster care. The advocacy group known as the Kentucky Forum for Rights, Economics and Education says parental incarceration has driven up the number of kids in the foster care system. One in ten Kentucky children has experienced a parent’s incarceration. Experts say these children are at increased risk of poverty, behavioral problems and poor academic performance.
The visit of the U-S Department of Transportation Secretary to the Tri-State has been postponed. Sean Duffy will meet with local leaders in Henderson to discuss the I-69 Ohio River Bridge Project on a day yet to be selected.
The driver of a Honda Accord that ran threw a stop sign is facing three charges. During the traffic stop on Park Avenue, Marisol Ramirez told the officer she did not have her passport and that she had been in the country for four years. The officer explained that her international permit was not valid because it was forged. When Ramirez arrived at the county jail, the deputy jailers recognized her and said that she had recently been in jail.
Guardrail work is underway in Muhlenberg and McLean counties. One project is near Island on U-S 431 from Doc Brown Road to Calvert Lane. The second project will be on KY 171 in the “s-curves” approximately a half mile south of John Moore Road.
The agency that studies disease, injuries, and death among miners is being downsized even as mining-related deaths are on the rise. Steve Schafrik (SHAF-rick) of U-K says the studies being done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health cannot be easily be replicated because of the specialized equipment used by miners. (Clip in audio below) Schafrik says one out of five of the nation’s operating coal mines are located in Kentucky.
The Hopkins County Humane Society is working hard to promote their Paws 5-K Run-Walk. It’s an important fundraiser since they have to construct a new building due to tornado damage. The event will be on Saturday, June 14th. There will be prizes in all of the divisisons for men and women. For details, visit the Facebook page of the Humane Society.
