A traffic stop of a driver and his passenger for not wearing their seat belts is what led to an arrest last week on South Main. In plain view of the officer, there was a dish with suspected
marijuana residue. The officer also detected the smell of alcohol in the Chevrolet Tahoe. Failing the sobriety test was Ja’qavion Drone. A search of the vehicle produced several T-H-C vape pens and suspected marijuana. Afterwards, Drone was booked into the county jail.
One of the recent occupants of the Hopkins County Jail was an Illinois woman who was arrested on South Main for displaying an outdated Illinois tag. Shannon Carpenter also did not have her driver’s license during the traffic stop. Central Dispatch reported that Carpenter’s license had been suspended.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office needs more deputies. Sheriff Billy Braden believes the fiscal court needs to provide the financial assistance. He says some larger agencies have been recruiting from his deputies as they move on to higher pay and improved benefits.
Congress is considering a proposal that could cost Kentucky nearly double what it spends on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. Dustin Pugel with the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy says the change could cost Kentucky nearly double what it spends. (Clip in audio below) SNAP proponents say the program is bloated and will save the federal government 300-billion over the next decade.
One of the needs of the Kentucky Sports Factory is now met. Eight sets of bleachers are now in place for spectators. Assisting in the project was the Muhlenberg Job Corps Center.
A Madisonville police officer was on hand when a North Main Street driver struck two utility poles and collided with several vehicles. One of the vehicles hit by 21-year-old John Oakley in his Ford F-150, was a Dodge Ram pickup. It’s driver and passenger were life-flighted to Evansville. Oakley faces five charges, including operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The officer was preparing to conduct a funeral escort at Harris Funeral Home.
When a Madisonville cop spotted a vehicle being driven by a man who once could not prove he had auto insurance, a traffic stop is what ensued. When questioned, Genero Duran said the original card was burned up. Central Dispatch informed the officer that the driver’s status should be revoked. Duran was arrested on South Main and transported to the county jail.
In Frankfort, the governor is glad to report that there’s a new record for job growth. Mr. Beshear says the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the number of people employed, the number of filled jobs and the civilian labor force in Kentucky are at their highest levels in history. The number of people employed in April exceeded two million.
The hot air balloons will be returning to Mahr Park Arboretum . The city’s events coordinator says the big evening will be Friday, August 29th. Luci Bess says they learned a lot about hosting the balloon event last year. (Clip in audio below)
