The National Weather Service says a dry cold front tomorrow (Friday) night will drop temperatures down to more seasonable readings for the weekend.
An elementary student in Webster County is being charged with intentionally starting a fire at school. A burning trashcan was discovered in the bathroom at Providence Elementary on Tuesday. The fire department easily put it out and removed the smoke. There were no injuries. The police say the student was arrested and the child’s parents were cooperative. The student is charged with arson and wanton endangerment.
In Muhlenberg County, a school resource officer says most parents have no idea about the Tik Tok scheme that has their kids selling photos of themselves. David Gomez says it involves teenagers with Venmo, PayPal, or digital cash accounts who are attracted by the opportunity to make money by taking photos of themselves that can lead to such unsavory things as human trafficking , prostitution, and sextortion. Gomez strongly suggests that parents spend more time with their kids.
The state says the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is only slightly higher than the national rate. Dustin Pugel (PYU-gil) of the Kentucky Center for Economic Policy says workers are now much more likely than three years ago to say it would be difficult for them to get the kind of job they’d want if they were to look for a new one.
Kentucky continues to add new jobs in non-farm sectors and manufacturing. The state’s civilian workforce now exceeds two million.
Our local college is the winner of what many see as community colleges’ most competitive and prestigious national honors. Madisonville Community College has won the Bellwether Award at the Community College Futures Assembly in San Antonio. The award recognizes innovative and impactful programs that drive student success and economic growth. The award-winning initiative highlights the college’s transformative programming where the former Dotiki Mine Portal was repurposed to become the Lisman Workforce Complex. The complex provides hands-on career training in high-demand fields.
The governor will be in town this week to dedicate the new Western Kentucky Police Training Center. Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton says the first classes are underway.
A smoldering pan on a stovetop is what recently drew the Madisonville Fire Department to the Cross Creek Apartments on Island Ford Road. Neighbors dialed the emergency number. The fire crew found a slight haze in the kitchen area, and then ventilated the apartment.
One person is recovering from a 2-vehicle collision in Madisonville on Tuesday afternoon. The police say the Nissan (roozh) Rouge being driven by 36-year-old Jacob Campbell of Madisonvile ran a red light on East Center Street and collided with a Kia Soul being driven by 68-year-old Sherry Scott of White Plains. Scott visited the E-R.
