This morning at 10, the Hopkins County Fiscal Court meets at the Government Center. New business includes the free Sheriff’s Office app. It’s intended to improve communication with the community. It’s available on the App Store and Google Play.
In Madisonville, the city council meets this afternoon at 4:30. City hall is at 77 North Main. The Hopkins County School Board meets at 5:30 at 3-20 South Seminary. There will be no classes on Friday, March 14th. Spring Break will be from Monday, March 31st to Friday, April 4th.
There’s talk of some new restaurants and businesses moving into Hanson before the end of the year. City planner Silas Matchem believes the city is about to take on a new look. Mathchem says there is plenty of opportunity to develop new housing in Hanson.

In Muhlenberg County, the organizers of the annual Penguin Plunge are thrilled with this year’s event. 31 brave students took the plunge into the freezing water. All of the money that was raised will support the 4-H Food-for-Kids Backpack Program. This program provides students with food-filled backpacks every weekend of the school year. Only 6-dollars separated the top two schools donation totals: Central City Elementary and Greenville Elementary School Beta.

Governor Beshear says the state is in the search and rescue phase. The president says our state has been granted an emergency disaster declaration. It’s being reported that over 1-thousand rescues have been performed by emergency teams. Emergency Management officials say distribution centers for supplies are being established. They say residents across the state are seeing dangerous and life-threatening conditions.
In Madisonville, what had been talked about for a long time is now coming to be. Recruits are arriving for classes at the first-ever basic training class at the new, Western Kentucky Campus of the Department of Criminal Justice Training.
There’s good news at the Hopkins County Jail. The annual Quality Assurance Site Review by the Kentucky Division of Addiction Services is complete and the jail has a perfect score. Over 55 areas were rated.
The state says many people travel out of state to give birth at freestanding birth centers because Kentucky has one of the highest maternal mortality rates. Trimble County resident Paige Thompson says she worries about those in rural counties who have no options for a natural birth in a home-like environment.
In Frankfort, Senate Bill 17 would exempt freestanding birth centers from the state’s certificate-of-need requirements. Those are the rules that regulate health care facilities. The Kentucky Hospital Association says hospitals are better equipped to handle unpredictable medical complications.
