In Hopkins County, the school superintendent is out with a statement regarding the dropping of the district’s campaign to pursue a nickel tax to address the aging infrastructure. Amy Smith says the district felt the tax was the only feasible solution. More than one thousand community members signed a petition rejecting it. Smith says the funding formula has not kept pace with the rising cost of maintaining buildings and delivering the kind of education students deserve. A student-led group has filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth.
Another county is joining Muhlenberg County in shutting down its schools due to illness. Webster officials say too many students, teachers, and substitutes are ill. They’re suggesting that everyone sanitize their school gear and backpacks. The district will be cleaning their buildings and busses.

In Muhlenberg County, a burglary investigation has four suspects. The burglaries were in Beechmont, Beech Creek, and Belton. The items taken were a vehicle, a motorcycle, numerous guns, and several thousand dollars worth of various items. Most of the stolen items have been recovered and returned to their owners. Charged in the crime are Randall Hutchings, David Coursey, Russel Harrison, and Laura Wright.
