In Madisonville, the Marching Maroons are headed to the Class 4-A Semifinals tomorrow (on Saturday) in Crestwood at South Oldham High School. The top six bands in each class will advance to the State Finals later in the day at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium at the University of Louisville.
Webster County will be evaluating the fire damage to the old Slaughters Elementary School. Channel 14 is reporting that a controlled burn got out of control on Wednesday night. The school has sat empty for years. Several fire departments were called in since there was a water-main break. Some walls had to be torn down to fight the fire.
The mayor of Madisonville says the community should understand that we have a well-run fire department. Kevin Cotton says they are able to quickly get to the fire.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office says there may be more drug arrests after two persons in Sebree were incarcerated on Friday the 18th. A search warrant at a residence on East Washington Street led to charges against Katrina Higgins and Brandon Higgins. The WCSO says they recovered such things as marijuana plants, T-H-C edibles, oxycodone, and drug paraphernalia.
A candidate for the Dawson Springs school board is withdrawing. Lisa Cotton says she may come back and do some substitute teaching. Anyone desiring to run in Cotton’s place for the school board post should contact the county clerk to file as a write-in candidate. Step one is to contact the superintendent.

Two area Delta Regional Authority projects will benefit the Pennyrile Area Development District. Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville was awarded almost half a million dolllars to upgrade and replace medical equipment. Hanson was awarded more than 190-thousand dollars for a waterline project that will promote business development and industry attractiveness. These investments are part of the States’ Economic Development Assistance Program.
In Madisonville, you need a permit to burn unneeded items. Tuesday evening, the Madisonville Fire Department rushed to a residence in the area of Dempsey Street and West Noel Avenue where the resident was attempting to put out a 12 by 12-foot fire of clothes, mattresses, and general garbage. In about 30 minutes, the fire crew put out the blaze and informed the resident of the ordinance.
The Webster County Sheriff’s Office has details about a fight in Sebree where one of the men was armed. It took place on Sunday evening at a residence on McDonald Road. The WCSO says Melvin Guerra and Hector Guerra were intoxicated. Both men face multiple charges. Melvin Guerra was in possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia.
Madisonville hosts a major gospel music event this weekend. Grapevine Baptist is calling it the Gospel Music Extravaganza. It’s Friday evening 6:30 and Saturday afternoon at 2. Spokesperson Teresa Childers says one of the groups is Greater Vision who has been together for over three decades. Grapevine Baptist is on Sandcut Road.
